For those who have relocated to Germany are permitted in principle to drive with their licence obtained abroad. A classification and translation must be carried out by the ADAC and a distinction is made between European and non-European driving licences. European driving licences remain valid in Germany. Some licences from other countries can be converted without the need to do a test, while otthers must undertake theoretical or both theoretical and practical tests. As a rule, foreign driving licences remain valid for only 6 months after arrival, whereby they must be then either converted or the tests must be taken.
